The Bold Buccleuch
Honouring Walter Scott, 1st Lord of Buccleuch, who famously defied Queen Elizabeth I, this blend celebrates Border bravery. Combining Lowland grain with Highland and Speyside malts aged in sherry, wine and madeira casks, it delivers bold character and elegant complexity.
Bottled at cask strength without chill-filtration or colouring. Presented in a beautifully crafted gift box.
Nose: Butterscotch and honey balanced by a touch of smoke, petrichor and ozone… a whiff of electric storm!
Palate: A beguiling hint of rancio, buttery with butterscotch, apricot and walnut undertones. Finishes with a dollop of Christmas pudding.

When the English Queen Elizabeth I stated in 1596 “With ten thousand such men, our brother in Scotland might shake the firmest throne of Europe” she was speaking of Walter Scott, 1st Lord Scott of Buccleuch. Known throughout the Borderlands as the Bold Buccleuch, Scott was famed for his single-handed rescue of fellow Border Reiver Kinmont Willie Armstrong from the English at Carlisle Castle.
To avoid the fallout of this brave feat causing a war between the two countries, Scott surrendered to the English authorities and was sent to be interviewed by the Queen who asked how he had the affrontery to undertake such a dangerous act… he replied “What is it that a man dare not do?”
To laud our fellow Border Reiver, we have honoured one of our fine blends with his name and believe in the same sentiments when choosing the whiskies that make up this blend, reminding ourselves also that the English Court of that day had to issue an edict limiting the amount of Sherris Sack consumed at court to “twelve gallons a day, and no more”.
