The Bishop's Curse
Taking its name from Archbishop Gavin Dunbar’s infamous 1525 curse upon the Border Reivers, this whisky embodies fiery spirit rather than wrath. Distilled in 2008, it combines grain whiskies finished in French red wine, Cognac and Jamaican rum casks for a complex, indulgent blend.
Bottled at cask strength without chill-filtration or colouring. Presented in a beautifully crafted gift box.
Nose: Rich honey, beeswax, undertones of red fruit.
Palate: Honey, toffee, creamy, beeswax, cranberries, redcurrants, and a slight funk; long oily, well-developed finish.

In the 13th – 17th centuries, lawless gangs of racketeers raided the Scottish borderlands. They were known as the Border Reivers.
In October 1525, the Archbishop of Glasgow, Gavin Dunbar let loose with an astonishing outburst of invective heaped on the Border Reivers (in the Scottish borders), naming whole towns and families as being guilty of the most heinous offences against mankind. His 1,069-word curse was required to be read by the priests in all the parishes of the border lands to their congregations the following Sunday.
Several years ago, our whisky makers took some of our 2008 distilled grain whisky and started a second period of maturation of it in many different other spirit and wine finishing casks. The Bishop’s Curse is blended from a base of refill Whisky with whiskies that we have selected from those finished in French Red Wine, French Cognac and Jamaican Rum barrels. These ‘modern day reivers’ in our Scottish Border warehouse were singled out for praise rather than being cursed for the flavours they had stolen from the casks, but we thought that you might enjoy the flavour of the hubris of the then Archbishop of Glasgow alongside our fine whisky.
