Our latest Distillery Reserve release, The Winged Isle - An t-Eilean Sgitheanach - represents another exciting snippet of Torabhaig’s journey of whisky exploration. Inspired by the ancient history of Skye, this cask strength single malt reaches back to a landscape of dinosaur footprints, fossil discoveries and deep peat beds shaped long before whisky became part of the island’s story.
Bottled at 60.6% ABV and matured in a carefully balanced combination of Bourbon, Oloroso and Refill Whisky casks. Rather than being defined by one single cask style or finishing period, The Winged Isle is a reflection of Torabhaig’s approach to blending, bringing together smoke, oak and spirit character in considered harmony.
Crafted using heritage Chevalier barley - a grain first developed in the 1820s - alongside modern Concerto and Laureate barley strains, and fermented with Distillemax MW and Anchor DY yeasts, this release draws a line between ancient bones and ancient grains.
Bottled without chill filtration or colouring.
Nose: Earthy and rich, with notes of dark treacle, vanilla and dried fruit. Dried figs and prunes provide depth and sweetness, while gentle bonfire smoke, reminiscent of the first moments of a fire taking hold, weaves through the aroma. Hints of autumn foliage add a seasonal character and further complexity.
Palate: Full-bodied and oily, with warming cinnamon and clove at the forefront. Tobacco notes develop across the palate, alongside cereal sweetness, caramelised sugar and dark treacle. Raisins and dried figs bring richness and depth, adding further complexity to the whisky's character.
Finish: Lingering cereal notes fade gradually into drying oak tannins. A gentle astringency adds definition to the finish, which remains balanced and well-rounded throughout.
