Having spent over seven years as part of the Mossburn and Torabhaig family, Alan Philp now oversees production, warehousing and maturation across the group in his role as Director of Group Whisky Production - a recently expanded position spanning sites in Scotland, the United States and Japan.
With a background rooted in process, analysis and spirit character development, Alan’s work has long focused on understanding how raw materials and production decisions shape flavour - particularly within grain whisky production and alternative mash bills.
Alongside this, he has developed a broad blending perspective, working across different spirit styles, cask types and maturation profiles to build balance, structure and consistency within the final whisky. That combined approach continues to shape how Mossburn & Torabhaig explore new make character, maturation strategy and product development.
Alan holds an MSc in Brewing and Distilling from the International Centre for Brewing and Distilling at Heriot-Watt University and is currently undertaking a PhD focused on distilling operations, further developing his research-led approach to production and process optimisation. So it's safe to say, he takes his whisky seriously.
Looking ahead, Alan’s focus remains on continuing to explore flavour development through raw materials, process and maturation, while maintaining a strong respect for the traditional techniques and flavour profiles that define Scotch whisky.
